The tip calculator works out the tip, the total and the per-person share, with three rounding options. It also reports the surplus when rounding up each share. A detail most tip calculators leave out, and the reason a rounded split sometimes collects noticeably more than the bill.
How it works
- Exact amounts: tip is bill × percentage, split evenly with no rounding.
- Round the total up: the total goes to the next whole unit and the tip absorbs the difference.
- Round each share up: each person pays a whole unit, which can collect more than the bill and tip together.
The third option is where the surplus appears. Four people rounding up from 19.65 each pay 20, collecting 78.60 against a total of 78.60, but from 19.05 each, they collect 80 against 76.20, nearly four units over.

The surplus of 1.34 is reported rather than quietly becoming extra tip, which is what most calculators do.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Convention varies by country and even by city, and neither is wrong. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the more common advice in the US; many people simply tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure matches your intention. The tool has no way to know which your bill shows.
Why does rounding each share up collect more than the bill?
Because every person rounds up independently, so the surplus is the sum of all the individual roundings. With four people that can be nearly four whole units. The tool shows the surplus explicitly so it is a decision rather than an accident.
What tip percentage is normal?
Entirely dependent on country. Fifteen to twenty percent is standard in the United States, ten percent or a rounded-up total is common in much of Europe, and tipping is unusual or actively discouraged in Japan. The slider covers zero to thirty for that reason.
Does it handle an uneven split?
No, it divides evenly. Splitting by what each person ordered needs the individual amounts, which is a different tool. The list sum calculator will add up each person’s items if you need to do it by hand.
