Name Generators

These 16 name generators cover people, pets, businesses, characters and places. Each draws from a curated list chosen for that kind of name, so the results are pronounceable rather than assembled from random syllables.

16 tools

What these name generators do differently

The 16 tools split by the kind of name rather than by style. Six produce names for people: baby names filtered to traditionally male, female or unisex lists, a middle name generator, a surname generator spanning five naming traditions, and a full random name generator that pairs 84 first names with 30 surnames for 2,520 combinations.

Four produce names for invented things: characters, superheroes, fantasy cities and towns. The town and city generators build from real place-name elements, so a result such as Ravenscroft or Aethvale carries the same suffix meanings a real map would use.

The remaining six cover practical naming: businesses, teams, usernames, nicknames, dogs and dinosaurs. The dog name generator draws only from names of one or two syllables with hard consonants, because those are the names a dog reliably distinguishes when called across a park.

None of these checks a result against a company register, a domain registrar or a platform. A generated business name or username can already belong to somebody, so search for it before you commit.

Which name generator to use

Six of these produce names for people and are easy to confuse. The difference is which part of a name they give you.

Frequently asked questions

Are the names produced here real names or invented ones?

Both, depending on the tool. The baby, boy, girl, surname and dog generators draw from lists of real names in ordinary use. The fantasy city, superhero and dinosaur generators build invented names from real elements, so a result follows the patterns of a real name without being one.

Can I use a generated business name for an actual company?

Check it first. The business name generator combines words from fixed lists and checks nothing against a company register, a trademark database or a domain registrar. A name it produces may already be taken, and in some cases may be protected, so search before you commit to it.

How many different names can these generators produce?

It varies by tool and each page states its own figure. The random name generator reaches 2,520 combinations from 84 first names and 30 surnames. The nickname generator reaches 1,200 from 30 adjectives and 40 nouns. The superhero generator reaches 192 from 12 titles and 16 nouns.

Why do some name generators repeat a name within one draw?

They should not, and by default they do not. Each draw removes a name once it has been used, so a single batch contains no repeats. Across separate draws a name can reappear, because each draw starts from the full list again rather than remembering what came before.
