The baby name generator draws a shortlist from 84 curated names, 30 traditionally boys’, 30 traditionally girls’ and 24 unisex. Pick a list and a shortlist length, and every name in a single draw is different, so 30 names means 30 distinct options rather than the same few repeated.

How it works

Names are grouped by how they are conventionally used, not by any claim about who should carry them. Selecting "Any" merges all three lists into one pool of 84.

  1. Choose which list to draw from, or leave it on Any for all 84 names.
  2. Choose a shortlist length of 10, 20 or 30.
  3. Each draw removes names as it picks them, so no name appears twice in one shortlist.

Picks use the browser cryptographic random number generator with rejection sampling, so every name has an equal chance of appearing. The simpler remainder approach most generators use would very slightly favour names near the start of the list.

Examples

A shortlist of 10 from the full pool

List

Any

How many

10

Result

Maeve, Tobias, Iris, Kai, Genevieve, Rowan, Silas, Thea, Quinn, Nathaniel

Ten distinct names from a pool of 84 leaves 74 unseen, so a second draw looks substantially different.

Unisex names only

List

Unisex

How many

10

Result

Sage, Emery, Quinn, Marley, Dakota, Robin, Ellis, Tatum, River, Kit

The unisex list holds 24 names, so a draw of 30 returns all 24 rather than padding the shortlist with repeats.

Limits worth knowing

The list is curated rather than comprehensive: 84 names spanning classic, uncommon and modern registers. It is not a popularity ranking and does not reflect any national naming statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the baby name generator not show name meanings or origins?

Because meanings are contested more often than name sites admit. The same name is routinely given three different etymologies by three sources. The generator gives you candidates to research properly rather than one confident-sounding derivation.

Can the same name appear twice in one shortlist?

No. Each draw removes a name from the pool once picked, so a shortlist of 30 holds 30 different names. A fresh draw starts from the full list again, so names can repeat between shortlists.

What happens if I ask for more names than a list holds?

You get the whole list in random order. The unisex list has 24 entries, so requesting 30 unisex names returns 24.

How does this differ from the separate boy and girl name generators?

The name pools are identical. Those tools drop the category picker and draw from one list only. Use this one when you want to compare across all three lists in a single shortlist.
