How it works
Area factors are the square of the corresponding length factors, which is the source of the most common conversion mistake, scaling a length by 3 multiplies the area by 9, not by 3.

Frequently asked questions
Why is one hectare not a round number of acres?
Because the two were defined from unrelated systems. A hectare is 10,000 m² by construction; an acre is 4,840 square yards, historically the area one team could plough in a day. Their ratio, about 2.471, is an accident of history and does not simplify.
Why does doubling a room’s dimensions quadruple its area?
Because area scales with the square of length. Doubling both sides multiplies the area by 2², or four. This is the most common error in area conversion, applying a length ratio directly instead of squaring it.
Is a square foot exactly defined?
Yes. The foot has been exactly 0.3048 m since 1959, so a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m². No rounding is involved in the definition, only in the display.
