The generator invents an original anime-style character: a name, an archetype, appearance, an ability, a habit, a flaw and a goal. Everything is invented from scratch rather than drawn from existing series, so what you get is a starting point for your own character rather than a lookup of somebody else's.

How it works

Each field is drawn independently from its own list, which is what produces combinations a person would not have written deliberately, a retired assassin turned baker who apologises before fighting is more interesting than either half alone.

  • Archetype sets the role: sixteen options, each already containing a small contradiction rather than a bare job title.
  • Ability is written as a specific, limited power. A power with an edge is easier to write than an unlimited one.
  • Habit is a behavioural detail, the thing that makes a character recognisable in a scene before they speak.
  • Flaw is what generates plot. A character who cannot accept help will refuse it at the worst possible moment, which is a scene.
  • Goal gives the character something to want, which is the difference between a character sheet and a character.

The lists deliberately avoid the elements that make a generated character unusable: no named existing series, no unlimited powers, and no goals so vague that nothing follows from them.

Examples

A generated character

Action

Generate

Result

Rei the Quiet, retired assassin turned baker, apologises before fighting, cannot accept help

The flaw and the habit pull against the archetype. That tension is what makes the combination worth writing rather than just describing.

Why the ability is narrow

Ability

Reads intent a half-second early

Result

A power with a hard limit

Half a second is useful in a fight and useless against a plan made yesterday. A bounded power creates situations; an unbounded one removes them.

Using it for a group

Action

Generate several and keep the ones that clash

Result

A cast whose flaws create friction

Characters whose flaws collide (one who over-prepares, one who is reckless when tired) generate scenes without any plot being planned.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real characters from anime series?

No. Every element is written for this generator, so nothing here belongs to an existing series. That is deliberate: a generator that returned real characters would be a lookup, and using the result in your own work would be a copyright problem rather than a starting point.

Can I use a generated character commercially?

Yes. The combinations are generic character elements with no claim over them, so a character you develop from one is yours. A generated name and archetype are not, on their own, protectable by anyone.

Why does it include a flaw and a goal rather than just appearance?

Because appearance alone does not give you anything to write. A flaw creates the moments where a character makes the wrong choice, and a goal explains why they are in the scene at all. Those two fields do more work than hair and eye colour combined.

How many different characters can it produce?

The lists multiply out to several hundred million combinations, so repeats are effectively impossible in normal use. What repeats is individual elements. You will see the same archetype again long before you see the same character.

How is this different from the D&D character generator?

The D&D generator produces a character built for a rules system, with a class, race and ability scores that mean something mechanically. This produces a character for a story, where the flaw and the goal matter and there are no statistics at all.
