Random Movie Generator
- Seven Samurai (1954, Akira Kurosawa)
The random movie generator draws from 30 films chosen for critical standing and range rather than recency, from Seven Samurai in 1954 to Past Lives in 2023, across a dozen countries. Each entry carries its year and director so you can find the right film rather than a remake.
How it works
The list is hand-picked and small. That is a deliberate trade: a scraped catalogue of thousands returns something forgettable most of the time, while a curated thirty returns something worth two hours on every draw.
- Spread across seven decades, with no more than four films from any one decade.
- Twelve countries of origin, including Japan, South Korea, Iran, Mexico, Brazil, France and Sweden.
- Director and year are included because titles repeat. There are several films called Close-Up.

Close-Up (1990, Abbas Kiarostami)
The director and year disambiguate the title, which matters here. Searching "Close-Up" alone returns several unrelated films.

Come and See (1985, Elem Klimov), Chungking Express (1994, Wong Kar-wai), Moonlight (2016, Barry Jenkins)
Three distinct draws, useful when a group wants to choose between options rather than accept one verdict.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there only 30 films?
Because every entry was chosen individually. A generator drawing from a scraped catalogue of ten thousand titles gives you something you have never heard of and probably should not watch. Thirty curated films means every draw is a defensible recommendation.
Does it tell me where a film is streaming?
No. Streaming rights change constantly and differ by country, so any availability information baked into a page is wrong within months. The tool gives you the title, year and director; a search will tell you where it is showing today.
Why include the director and year?
Because film titles are reused constantly, including for remakes of the same story. "Solaris", "Close-Up" and "The Departed" all return multiple films; the year and director make the recommendation unambiguous.
How recent is the list?
The newest entry is from 2023. The list is not updated automatically, so it will drift out of date at the recent end. That is the trade-off for curation over scraping.
