The random name generator combines 84 first names with 30 surnames, giving 2,520 possible full names. Switch the format to draw first names only, surnames only, or both together, and choose how many to produce in one go.

How it works

84 first names x 30 surnames = 2,520 combinations

84
the merged pool of boys’, girls’ and unisex first names
30
the surname list, spanning English, Italian, Spanish and Igbo origins

Full names are assembled by drawing independently from each list, then discarding any combination already produced in the same batch. With 2,520 combinations and a maximum batch of 40, collisions are rare but the check makes duplicates impossible.

Silas Nightingale, Amara Kirkwood, Quinn Vasquez, Thea Okonkwo, … (40 in total)

Forty draws from 2,520 combinations means roughly a 27 percent chance of at least one natural collision, which the duplicate check removes.

Restricting to surnames draws from the 30-entry list directly, so ten names are ten distinct surnames.

Frequently asked questions

How many different full names can the random name generator produce?

Exactly 2,520 to 84 first names multiplied by 30 surnames. That is enough that you will rarely see the same full name twice, but small enough that it is not a substitute for a real dataset.

Are these names of real people?

No. First names and surnames are drawn independently from two curated lists, so a combination may coincide with a real person by chance, exactly as any two common names might. Nothing here is derived from real records.

Can I use these for test data in an application?

Yes, and for a fuller record (email, phone and address) use the fake identity generator instead, which uses reserved domains and the fiction-only 555-01xx phone range.

Why do surnames come from several different origins?

A list drawn from one tradition produces test data that all looks alike, which hides bugs in name handling. Marchetti, Okonkwo, Vasquez and Winterbourne exercise different lengths, accents and character sets.
