The gothic font generator converts text into Fraktur and bold Fraktur, the blackletter styles encoded in Unicode. Fraktur is the specific blackletter form used in German printing into the twentieth century, and it is what most people mean by gothic or Old English lettering online.
How it works
Blackletter is a family, not one style: Textura, Rotunda, Schwabacher and Fraktur are all blackletter, and they differ noticeably. Unicode encoded Fraktur only, because it was needed for mathematical notation rather than for decoration.
- Plain Fraktur borrows five capitals (C, H, I, R and Z) from the Letterlike Symbols block, so those can be drawn differently from the rest of a word.
- Bold Fraktur is fully contiguous and renders more consistently as a result.
- Neither style includes digits or punctuation, so numbers pass through as ordinary characters.

Neither Fraktur range includes digits, so numbers are passed through unchanged. Mixing styled letters with plain digits is usually visible, which is worth checking before using it in a logo mock-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is Fraktur the same as Old English lettering?
Not quite. Both are blackletter, but Old English typefaces are usually based on Textura, which has narrower, more angular letterforms. Fraktur is the German printing style with more curvature. Unicode encodes Fraktur only, so that is what this tool produces.
Why do numbers stay in ordinary digits?
Because the Unicode Fraktur ranges cover letters only. They were added for mathematical use, where Fraktur symbols denote specific structures, and digits were never needed. Any number in your text passes through unchanged.
Which of the two styles should I use?
Bold Fraktur if consistency matters, because it is fully contiguous. Plain Fraktur borrows five capitals from an older Unicode block, and some fonts draw those in a visibly different style.
Will this work as a tattoo or print reference?
Treat it as a rough preview only. What you see depends entirely on which font your device chose to render those codepoints, and a printer or artist will use a real blackletter typeface with proper letterforms and spacing.
